The score requires an individual familiar with audio technology to manage all sound cues. The electronics performer launches sound cues called Scenes using a computer with a digital audio setup installed. Each Scene is launched in real time while following the Conductor and the score. The electronics performer should be familiar with following a music score (extensive details on requirements for the computer/electronic part can be found in the score).

Though not required, having the ensemble miked into the same soundboard as the electronic sounds will give greater mix control between the acoustic performers and the electronic part.

Extended percussive techniques are used on the piano as well as extended percussion techniques.

Knife-Edge was started in 2020 and went through several iterations with differing instrumentation before settling into its final form.  Though not consciously intended, a reaction to living through the COVID-19 pandemic is reflected in the soul of the piece.  There is a solemnity to the work.   Time moves slowly.  There is a strong sense of isolation and confinement. The lead voice, in the cello, continually attempts to rise above a feeling of desolation or loneliness to one of hope.  – notes by John Bickerton

The electronics in the score are mostly modulated static textures.  They have an industrial, mechanical, post-apocalyptic quality.

The ensemble moves slowly at a quietly sustained level being bathed in the electronic wash.

The cello is the lead melodic instrument, quietly expressing a sense of life and hope amid the unforgiving textural setting.  The piece is about 18 minutes long and is written for 10 musicians and an electronic/computer performer.
